background
If you’re planning on buying or
selling a car in Missouri
, you’ll need to file a bill of sale or notice of sale with the Missouri Department of Revenue within 30 days of the purchase date. While you don’t necessarily need a bill of sale in
Missouri
, it’s an important document to have on hand following the purchase or sale of your vehicle.

What is a bill of sale?

A bill of sale is a formal receipt that records the terms of a car’s purchase.
On a bill of sale, you can expect to see information such as the buyer and seller’s names (as well as addresses and signatures), details about the car (VIN, make, model, etc.), and the purchase price.
An important thing to keep in mind is that a bill of sale does not transfer ownership of the car. All it does is record the details of the sale. To transfer ownership of the vehicle, you’ll need to contact your local DMV and
file a title transfer
.

Is a bill of sale required in Missouri?

Yes and no. The Missouri Department of Revenue requires all private sellers to file either a bill of sale or a notice of sale within 30 days of the purchase date. Failing to do so could lead to a fine or, if it was deliberately not filed, a fine and a Class C Misdemeanor.
There are some exceptions to the requirement:
  • You do not need to file a bill of sale or notice of sale if your vehicle was sold to a dealership or an out-of-state buyer
  • Or if it was transferred to an insurance company due to a total loss of claim
Also, if you plan on using a bill of sale to show ownership on major parts in a rebuilt vehicle or for a temporary permit, you’ll need to get the form notarized

What is required in a Missouri bill of sale?

If you intend to use a bill of sale for the purchase or sale of your vehicle, you’ll first need to get a copy of
Form 1957
. Once that’s done, you’ll just need to fill out:
  • The buyer and seller’s information
  • Names, addresses, and signatures of both parties
  • The vehicle's information
  • Year, make, title number, and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • The purchase price
  • What should I do after I get a bill of sale?

Once the terms of the sale have been agreed upon, and the bill of sale properly filled out, you should make copies of the document for everyone involved. After that, file a copy of the bill of sale with the Missouri Department of Revenue.
You have up to 30 days to file the bill of sale, but it’s always best to do so as soon as possible.
You should also contact your local DMV to begin a title transfer. Remember: the bill of sale alone does not transfer ownership of the car!
