We won’t go as far as saying the 2022 BMW X5 has been redesigned—but there have been a few enhancements and changes for this model year.

One of the biggest selling points for the BMW X5 is the variety of options to choose from. The 2022 X5 is available with an inline 6-cylinder engine, a V8 engine, or a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain.

The base sDrive 40i trim comes with rear-wheel drive (RWD) while the three upper trims have all-wheel drive (AWD). All X5 SUVs with the standard inline six-cylinder engine utilize a mild hybrid powertrain, while the performance-focused top-tierM50i trim is equipped with a gas-powered V8 and the xDrive 45e trim offers a fully PHEV alternative.

2022 BMW X5 vs. 2021 BMW X5: what changed?

BMW has shaken things up a bit for the 2022 X5 facelift—especially in the design department. Let’s go over how things have changed compared to the 2021 BMW X5.

A new and exclusive X5 edition

We’ll start with the obvious: BMW has introduced a new, limited edition X5 model for 2022 called Black Vermillion. This is a fully loaded version of the

xDrive40i

trim and is only being offered for the 2022 model year. Only 350 units have been produced.

The Black Vermillion X5 takes its name literally, featuring Frozen Black Metallic body paint and sharp-looking vermillion red accents on the grille, brakes, and interior. It has an AWD drivetrain just like the xDrive40i but features the same exhaust system as the sportier M50i.

There’s no denying that the Black Vermillion X5 looks ridiculously cool, but the MSRP is steep at $83,295—that’s over 20 grand more than a standard X5 xDrive40i.

Styling

The X5 facelift for 2022 includes other changes too. One of the biggest things drivers will notice is the absence of the previously included wireless charging pad. Supply issues have prevented BMW from continuing to offer this feature altogether in the X5, but you’ve still got UBS ports aplenty to safeguard your phone’s battery life.

The 2021 X5’s Convenience package was also nixed on all 40i models for 2022. This was largely due to one of the biggest draws of the Convenience package—wireless charging—now being unavailable.

In its place is the new-for-2022 Climate Comfort package, an upgraded amenity that features heated front and rear seats, heated armrests, a heated steering wheel, and four-zone climate control. The Climate Comfort package for the 2022 X5 costs an additional $1,100.

Pricing

Yearly facelifts are an easy way for car brands to bump up pricing when the latest model is released. The BMW X5 is no exception.

When the 2021 BMW X5 was brand new it had a starting MSRP of $60,395. Fast forward to one year later and the base model 2022 X5 is going for $61,595. Unfortunately, prices are expected to rise from here, with the starting MSRP for the 2023 base model X5 jumping to $62,595.

The BMW X5 is currently in its fourth generation, which began with the 2019 X5. Let’s take a look at how entry-level prices have changed since the onset of the latest generation.
