background
The 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 has a 5x5.5 or "5 on 5.5" bolt pattern (or lug pattern). This means there are five bolts on each wheel that make a circle with a 5.5-inch diameter.
One of the most popular ways to customize a truck is to swap out your factory wheels for bigger ones. This can allow for better handling over rough terrain, better clearance, and an all-over smoother ride. However, before you start taking the wheels off your Dodge Ram 1500, you’ll need to know your bolt pattern.

1998 Dodge Ram 1500 bolt pattern

The 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 has a 5x5.5
bolt pattern
(often pronounced “5 on 5.5”). If you’re not sure what the numbers mean, look at the following formula:
# of bolts x diameter of the circle they form
A 5x5.5 lug pattern means your Ram 1500 has five bolts per wheel, and they form a ring with a  5.5-inch diameter.
There are a few other measurements you might need besides your bolt pattern if you plan to change out your wheels. These include the center bore measurement, wheel size, and stud size:
  • Factory wheel size: 16” to 17”
  • Stud size: 1/2" x 20
  • Center bore: 77.8 mm

How to measure your Ram 1500’s bolt pattern

That should be all you need to get your new truck wheels, but if you ever need to find another bolt pattern or lose your owner’s manual, you can measure your bolt pattern yourself!
Start by finding a measuring tape or a ruler. Since there are an odd number of bolts, you’ll want to measure starting at the outer edge of one bolt and go to the center of the one across it.
This measurement is the diameter of the circle and your second number in your bolt pattern. To get the first number, just count the number of bolts on one wheel.
