Toyota Prius Spare Tire Guide

Starting with the 2016 model year, Toyota Priuses are not equipped with a spare tire, but they do include an easy-to-use Tire Repair Kit.

background
Depending on what year your Toyota Prius was made, your vehicle will either come equipped with a spare tire or a Tire Repair Kit.

Since 2016, all Toyota Prius models have had a repair kit instead of a spare tire

In recent years, automotive companies have been replacing spare tires with Tire Repair Kits. That’s because spare tires add extra weight to a vehicle, causing a vehicle to burn more fuel. Opting out of a spare tire also creates more space for a vehicle overall.
In 2016, Toyota began releasing its hybrid hatchback, the Prius, without a spare tire. If you get a flat tire while driving around in a newer Prius model, you can expect to use a Tire Repair Kit to temporarily solve your problem.
To access your Prius tool kit: Look underneath your vehicle’s trunk floor.
Included in the kit are the following:
  • A single-use bottle of tire sealant
  • An air compressor
  • An air/sealant hose
Keep in mind: The Tire Repair Kit is designed to temporarily repair a puncture or tear on your tire caused by a small object like a nail or a screw. If the puncture is more than 4mm in diameter, you will most likely need to contact
Toyota roadside assistance
or AAA.

How to use the Toyota Prius Prius Tire Mobility Kit

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use the Toyota Prius Prius Tire Mobility Kit to fix a flat tire and get back on the road:
  • Find a safe place to park and turn your hazard lights on.
  • Locate the Tire Mobility Kit, which is underneath your vehicle’s trunk floor.
  • Examine the puncture to your tire, but don’t remove the debris or nail that caused the damage.
  • Remove the tire valve stem cap and extend the hose from the kit. From there, connect the cap to the valve stem and tighten it.
  • Turn off the compressor switch and disconnect the connector from the Prius battery. Next, connect the connector to the 12V power source located inside your vehicle
  • Attach the tire sealant to the compressor, then turn on your vehicle followed by the compressor.
  • Inflate the tire until you reach a PSI of about 36, then turn the compressor off. (Refer to your owner’s manual for the exact PSI.)
  • Drive for about 10 minutes to make sure the sealant is distributed inside the tire evenly. (Don’t drive over 50 mph.)
  • Visit a mechanic or repair shop immediately.
One thing to note: Once you’ve completed patching up your tire, place the reminder sticker (included in your tire kit) on your dashboard. This will help remind you to visit an auto repair shop.

FAQ

Certain model years of the Toyota Prius come equipped with a spare tire, but if you drive a 2016 model (or newer) your Prius will come with a Tire Repair Kit instead. That’s because forgoing a spare wheel reduces a vehicle’s weight and improves fuel economy.
