background
The 2017
Ford Explorer
, which has an 18.6-gallon fuel tank, came in fresh off the prior year’s makeover to stay competitive in an increasingly crowded market of three-row SUVs. With its off-road abilities married to its school carpool rep, the 2017 Ford Explorer followed in the footsteps of previous model years by serving as a family vehicle that’s rough and ready for snowy roads or bumpy terrain.
If you already have a 2017 Explorer but you lost the manual, or you’re thinking of buying one and are doing a bit of research, you’re in the right place.

How big is the gas tank on a 2017 Ford Explorer?

Unlike some other model years, Ford Motor Company kept it simple for 2017 by making every Explorer configuration consistent in the size of its gas tank. Each trim level has an 18.6-gallon tank, regardless of whether you’re driving an Explorer with the 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine, the 3.5-liter Duratec engine, or the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine.
They all have the same gas tank, but different trims were available with different engine and drivetrain configurations. Here’s a lineup of each 2017 Ford Explorer trim package:
The 2017 Explorer came standard with front-wheel drive, but four-wheel drive was also available. Either drivetrain could go with any of the engine configurations, including the 3.5-liter V6, the 2.3-liter turbocharged I-4, or the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6.

How to check your 2003 Ford Explorer’s gas tank size

If you’re still not totally convinced your Escape has an 18.6-gallon tank, feel free to check our accuracy! There are several ways to see for yourself:

Measure the gas tank

You’ll have to get under the car with your measuring tape to jot down the gas tank’s width, length, and height in inches. Multiply these three measurements together and divide that total by 231—the number of cubic inches per liquid gallon. This will tell you how many gallons your gas tank can hold.

Check your owner’s manual

See if you can find the owner’s manual for gas tank specifications. If you don’t have a hard copy handy, you can download it for free from the
Ford website
.

Drive till empty, then fill it up

If you’re the type who likes living on the edge, you can drive until your gas gauge indicates the tank is empty. It’s a little risky, but if you plan your driving right, you should be able to coordinate your arrival at a gas station before you’re left running on fumes. Then, simply fill up the tank and see how many gallons the fuel pump says you used.

How to save on fuel costs in a Ford Explorer

The 2017 Ford Explorer is well-known for its passenger room, cargo space, and great handling in poor driving conditions. But it’s also unfortunately known for being a bit of a gas guzzler. Depending on your engine configuration, you can bet on a combined mpg of 16 to 18.
To ease the toll that the Ford Explorer gas mileage takes on your pocketbook, you can try these tips to cut your gas consumption:
  • Stick to your maintenance schedule. Routine maintenance services like oil changes and tire rotations can actually help your vehicle run at optimal fuel efficiency. Keeping the tires properly inflated helps too.
  • Slow down. Driving at a reasonable speed, and using techniques like coasting to a stop instead of pumping the brakes every time, can help reduce your gas usage.
  • Don’t idle. Running your Explorer’s engine when you’re not moving should be avoided whenever possible.
