Subaru’s EyeSight system provides driver assist and safety technology and is now available on all Subaru models except for the BRZ Coupe. EyeSight comes standard for the Ascent, Forester, Legacy, and Outback models, and offers advanced adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and a lane-keep assist function.
Subaru is making waves in the race to produce the first self-driving car. In 2020, a 2021 Forester successfully made a self-driving maneuver using 5G and cellular V2X data—the first in the world to do so! While they continue to work on a fully autonomous car, Subaru offers driver assistance technology called EyeSight for almost all of their vehicles.

No, but Subaru does have impressive driver assistance tech that’s the next best thing.
EyeSight
is a hands-free driver assistance feature that helps drivers follow the speed limit, stay in their lane, and avoid hitting other cars or pedestrians. It uses two dual-color cameras mounted behind the rearview mirror to act as another set of eyes on the road ahead. EyeSight reduces the rate of rear-end crashes with injuries by a jaw-dropping 85%!Subaru’s EyeSight features are available on almost every vehicle produced from 2021 onward, with the features coming standard on all 2021 Forester, Legacy, Outback, and Ascent models. “Self-driving cars” might bring images of flying cars or automated taxis to mind, but the reality is a lot more down to earth.
In theory, self-driving cars use cameras, embedded sensors, GPS, and a core computer to make on the road decisions without any help from a human driver. The idea is that if the self-driving car can accurately create a 3D map of its surroundings, the computer can interpret the map and guide the car safely through traffic, down the highway, or into a parking space.
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has taken this theory of a fully autonomous car and has considered how the development of self-driving technology will advance. They came up with six levels of autonomous vehicles (AVS) and their development:
- Level 0: No automation. The human driver must be fully in control of all driving tasks at all times in order to operate a vehicle.
- Level 1: Driver assistance. The human driver is mainly in control while driver assistance technology takes care of one driving task. Cruise control, for example.
- Level 2: Partial automation. The human driver must stay fully engaged, but two or more driving tasks are taken care of (Subaru’s EyeSight falls in this category.)
- Level 3: Conditional automation. The car can fully drive itself under certain conditions, but the human driver must be ready to take over.
- Level 4: High automation. A human will rarely need to retake control of the vehicle. The car can drive itself in most scenarios.
- Level 5: Full automation. A human will never need to intervene. The car is able to drive itself under all conditions.
Obviously, we’re still a ways off from Level 5 autonomous cars. In addition to the technology not being there yet, the
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)
is still debating if fully autonomous cars would, in fact, be safer.
