Can electrical engineers work on cars?

I’m applying for an engineering degree and I’m interested in the automotive industry. With this new wave of electric vehicles, I was wondering if electrical engineers can work on cars?

Great question, and great field of study! Yes, electrical engineers can have a role in the designing and manufacturing stages of electric vehicles but mechanical engineers mainly work on cars.
Despite the shift towards electric vehicles, cars still require mechanical engineers for many stages of the process. Electrical engineers are often used in the earlier stages such as the designing phase and even the construction of the parts, but an
electric car
is still a car and will need a car expert.
With an advancement of technology comes an adaptation and evolution of the jobs surrounding the technology. Mechanical and automotive engineering jobs are likely evolving to have a much better understanding of the functions of electric cars specifically.
An article from The Washington Post however, explains that many mechanics are concerned about the impact of electric cars on the auto repair industry. Electric cars don’t have as many internal parts as internal combustion engines and therefore don’t require maintenance checks as often.
Hope this helps!
