Can you flat tow a Honda CR-V AWD?
I have a 2014 Honda CR-V that I want to bring on my family’s RV trip this year so we can explore some of the stops more easily. Can it be flat towed, or will I need to buy a dolly?

Great question! According to the Honda CR-V owner’s manual, you can flat tow a
Honda CR-V
AWD from model years 2014 and earlier. It cannot be flat towed if you have a 2015 Honda CR-V or newer. However, Honda does have specific recommendations for towing:
- Do not exceed speeds of 65 mph (100 km/h)
- Tow your CR-V with all four tires on the ground (flat towing) to avoid damage to the 4WD system—this is true regardless of the transmission (automatic or manual)
Here’s how to flat tow your Honda CR-V AWD:
- Hook up your CR-V and your motorhome using a reliable tow bar and follow the directions for installation.
- Put your CR-V’s emergency brake on and insert the tow bar attachment tabs into their receivers.
- Release the latch handles on the tow bar’s extending arms and secure the tow bar on both ends using linchpins.
The next steps are:
- Start your vehicle’s engine and allow it to idle for a few minutes at 1,000 RPM.
- Press the brake pedal and move the gearshift through all of its positions before shifting into drive (D).
- Stay in drive (D) for five seconds, then shift into neutral (N).
- Let your CR-V idle in neutral (N) for three minutes.
- Turn the ignition key into the acc position—this will shut off the engine and leave the steering wheel unlocked.
- Attach the safety cable and plug it into the wiring harness on your CR-V.
Also, ensure that before you start towing your CR-V that the climate control system is switched into its recirculated air mode to avoid exhaust fumes entering your RV or damaging your CR-V’s cabin.
