Do you check the oil while the car is running?

I’m trying to check my engine oil levels now and again, but I can’t remember if the car’s supposed to be running when I do it. Should I shut the engine off or is it safe to take a peek?

Good on you for performing your car maintenance! Whenever you check your engine oil, your car should not be running. For your safety, let the engine cool for 10-15 minutes so you won't burn yourself.
Some automakers, however, recommend checking the engine oil while it’s still warm. To do this, turn on your car, let it idle for a minute or two, and then shut it off. Wait one minute. Then pop the hood and proceed.
Always check your vehicle’s owner’s manual if you’re unfamiliar with the maintenance procedure. And if you still need help, there’s no shame in taking it to a mechanic and requesting they show you the ropes!
