How do I open the gas tank on a Kia Sportage?

I just picked up my brand-new 2022 Kia Sportage from the dealership and I need to fill up the tank, but I can’t find a lever anywhere. How do I open the gas tank door?

Learning the features of your new car can be overwhelming—but luckily, filling it up with gas is pretty simple and doesn’t require levers or buttons. To open the gas tank on a
Kia Sportage
, press the 3 o’clock position edge of the fuel filler lid. Once you hear the door release, pull the fuel filler lid out to fully open it and turn the fuel tank cap counterclockwise to remove it.
If you hear a hissing noise when you open your fuel door, don’t be alarmed—it’s just the tank pressure equalizing. Place the cap on the fuel filler lid and fill your tank!
Once you’re done fueling your tank, place the fuel filler cap back and turn it clockwise until it “clicks” once to make sure it’s secure. Close the fuel tank door and push it in lightly to ensure it’s securely closed.
When filling up your Sportage with gas, always remove the gas nozzle when it clicks off. Overfilling the tank on your Kia by more than three clicks is not recommended and can lead to the following:
  • Vehicle performance issues (engine stalling, fuel system damage, etc.)
  • Fuel spills
  • Potential gas fires
Taking care to fill your Sportage with the right amount and type of gas is a sure way to keep your Kia running at peak efficiency, but keeping up with a basic
car maintenance schedule
is another easy way!
