It takes an exhaust at least 20 minutes to cool down enough to touch. Of course, if it is a hot day or if your car is overheating, it will take a little longer.
Parts of your exhaust can get up to 1600℉, so it is really good that you are being careful! Wear safety gloves or use a rag to perform your inspection to be on the safe side.
