How much does it cost to replace a 2012 Toyota Camry transmission?

I got an estimate from a mechanic to replace the transmission in my 2012 Toyota Camry, but it seemed really expensive. How much should I expect a transmission replacement to cost?

A typical 2012 Toyota Camry transmission replacement will cost anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000 or more. The cost depends on several things like:
  • Type of replacement transmission you buy (a salvage or rebuilt transmission will be cheaper than a brand new one)
  • Labor costs to have it installed
  • Whether or not your mechanic has to repair any additional damage while replacing the transmission
