What's a hardship license in Colorado?

I received a DUI in Boulder, so my license was suspended. But now I can’t get to work. The traffic cop told me I’m probably eligible for a hardship license, but I have no idea what it is. What exactly is a hardship license in Colorado?

A hardship license in
Colorado
is a type of restricted license that allows you to drive to certain places only. If you have a
suspended license in Colorado
due to something like a
DUI
, you might be eligible for a hardship license.
The list of destinations typically includes:
  • Work
  • Doctor’s appointments
  • Traffic court
  • Court-required community service
  • School
  • Church
  • Alcohol education courses or Alcoholics’ Anonymous
To obtain a hardship license: The traffic court has to agree to it. If they do, you’ll also be required to get an
SR-22 in Colorado
to get car insurance.
Keep in mind: An SR-22 will likely cause your car insurance rates to skyrocket.
