The Chevy Malibu
is fun to drive, but some years are better than others. The best year for a used Chevy Malibu is the 2022. Looking at NHTSA recalls and owner complaints, there are multiple years you’ll want to avoid. The 2004, 2013, and 2016 model years for the Chevy Malibu each racked up double-digit recalls, while the 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2014, and 2018 Malibus also had higher volumes of recalls.
The model years with the highest volumes of complaints range from 2004 through 2013, with more than 800 complaints on file. The 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2010 models lead this herd. When coupled with the recalls, we can safely say the 2004, 2005, 2006 were the worst Chevy Malibu years.
We generally suggest buying newer models as opposed to older ones, and given you’re open to buying one brand new; we’d say the best years for a used Chevy Malibu include 2020 and newer models. If you’re looking to save some money with an older one, the 2016, 2017, and 2019 model years are relatively safe to buy as well.
