Why is my Kia Soul making a ticking noise?

I recently bought a used Kia Soul and have started noticing a ticking sound whenever the vehicle has been turned on—it isn’t super loud, but it is noticeable, and I was wondering if it was something I should have checked out. Why is my Kia Soul making a ticking noise?

Your Kia Soul may be making a ticking noise for a couple of reasons, including:
  • Low engine oil
  • An exhaust leak
  • A problem with the ignition system
  • A faulty valve lifter
Out of these four possible causes, low engine oil is the most likely to produce a ticking noise, so check your oil level and add a quart if necessary.
If low oil isn’t the issue and the ticking noise persists, you might be dealing with something more worrisome, in which case you should have a mechanic diagnose the problem for you. It may come to light that the ticking noise is caused by one of the catalytic converter or engine issues cited by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in one of several recalls issued for various Kia Soul model years.
In any case, you’ll want to make sure your new vehicle is protected by the right insurance policy—fortunately,
